Arrhythmias, high blood pressure, and plaque buildup are all examples of cardiovascular problems that may develop without noticeable symptoms. Diagnostic heart ultrasounds provide imaging in a noninvasive and safe way, without incisions or radiation, making them a low-impact way to detect problems early, when treatment generates the best outlooks.
John Terzian, MD, FACC, and his team at Bridgewater Primary Care & Cardiology, LLC, in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, offer diagnostic ultrasounds as part of their cardiology care services.
In this month’s blog, we’ll take a deep dive into the preventive benefits that soundwave imaging provides for you.
Most are familiar with ultrasound as the device used to create an image of a baby during pregnancy. The technology uses high-frequency sound waves to bounce off tissue, creating echoes.
A computer analyzes these echoes and interprets them into images. The system can recognize details like the direction of blood motion and the function of heart valves, key to understanding how well your cardiovascular system works.
Carotid ultrasounds focus on blood flowing through the arteries of your neck, crucial blood vessels, since these supply blood to the brain. Narrowing of the carotid arteries can indicate an increased risk of stroke, so efficient blood flow through your neck is crucial.
The echocardiogram is perhaps the best-known cardiovascular ultrasound, a method for evaluating the function and structure of your heart. Dr. Terzian gains valuable insight into the chamber size, pumping ability, and valve performance of your heart.
Peripheral vascular ultrasounds focus on blood flowing through your arms and legs. Again, the key search is for reduced blood flow, blood vessel blockages, or concerns about the function of vascular components.
Venous ultrasounds assess the performance of your veins, the blood vessels responsible for returning oxygen-depleted blood to your heart and lungs, where it is reoxygenated. Tiny one-way valves in your veins keep blood flowing in the right direction. When these valves don’t work properly, blood can pool in your veins, increasing the risk of swelling, varicose veins, and blood clots.
Diagnostic ultrasounds can help identify potential cardiovascular issues before symptoms appear. When you’re diagnosed with a condition, ultrasounds are often the primary way to monitor its progression over time.
Ultrasounds provide information for planning treatment for certain conditions as well as for gauging how effectively treatment works. When a potential problem comes up early, you have a better chance of avoiding invasive treatments, which could be necessary.
Often, there’s little preparation. As medical procedures go, diagnostic ultrasounds can often be the most benign. Depending on the area being examined, you can expect an appointment length of between 30 and 60 minutes.
There’s usually no downtime after your appointment. In most cases, you can drive yourself to and from your appointment. We’ll inform you if your procedure requires special accommodation or preparation.
